I believe her characters name was “Tandaweh” I believe it was in the early 80′s

Zoe Saldana was born in 1978, so she couldn’t have acted in an ’80s movie.
It’s actually Thandie Newton. She played “Thandiwe Adjewa” in the 1991 boarding school movie “Flirting”.
