The Changing Faces of the Sugababes

Who suspected that when the Sugababes first invaded our radios in 1998 they’d still be around over 10 years later? Consisting of a trio of talented, soulful singers who refreshed the pop music of the nineties with their vocal capabilities, the Sugababes were a welcomed girl band by many – but they’ve changed a lot over the years.

It’s not unusual for a member of a band to leave and be replaced by somebody else. However, the Sugababes have undergone this move so often over the years that their current line up now has none of the original members left in the band – an event that has had some fans rallying for the old members to get back together.

Most people, though, seem keen on the new faces. As long as the girls continue to make good music, they think, it doesn’t matter who’s in the band.

The Sugababes have created seven studio albums and one singles collection over the years. They have headlined many immensely popular tours and appeared at numerous events where they have been extremely well-received. There is something about the band that retains a massive fan base, even when the regular fixtures of the trio seem to continually change.

Originally in the line up were members Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan. These three talented singers managed to keep together from 1998 until 2001, when Donaghy was replaced by Heidi Range. At this point in their careers, the girls released one of their most famous singles, ‘Freak Like Me’, and officially broke into the big time.

However, it was only several years once again before the line up changed. In 2005, Mutya Buena left the band and was replaced by Amelle Berrabah. The band went on to create more records, never losing out on much of their previous popularity. They continued to break records, including being the first female act to place number one on the single, album and download charts at the same time, with platinum awards being given to five of their UK albums.

In 2009, however, tensions in the band were at a high and the last of the founding members, Keisha Buchanan, left to be replaced by Jade Ewen. The future is uncertain for the band, but with a new album and a promising collection of talent, it looks like fans will still be buying CDs and downloads, and streaming music for many years to come.
